The Story of Sin due on UK DVD! 10 Apr 2004: We can confirm that we have brokered a deal to allow the UKs Nouveaux Pictures to release Borowczyk's acclaimed Story of Sin (Dzieje Grzechu, 1974) onto DVD. This release will mark its World DVD debut! We also supplied the stunning cover image, which was sourced from the Japanese theatrical release poster art.
From Nouveaux's press release: Nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival, Walerian Borowczyk's THE STORY OF SIN is a tragic romance based on the turn-of-the-century literary classic by acclaimed Polish writer Stefan Zeromski. Passionate melodrama, surrealist erotica and the rapturous strains of Mendelssohn collide head on in THE STORY OF SIN - the tale of Eva, a young Victorian girl whose passionate affair with a married man leads to betrayal, infanticide, prostitution and a final heroic and grotesque act of self-sacrifice. The DVD will feature the original Polish soundtrack, with optional English subtitles. DVD Extras are being completed by Borowczyk expert Daniel Bird:

The Beast / La bête comes to American DVD! Following our previous announcement about the forthcoming British DVD release of this film, Cult Epics recently announced that they will also be releasing this title on DVD in America. I have no advance word on its completeness at this stage. I presume, like their other releases, that it will include English and Dutch subtitles, and will be All Region compatible.

Jan Lenica passes away News just in from Mondo Erotico's Borowczyk correspondent, Daniel Bird: Jan Lenica, Borowczyk's early collaborator, died last Friday night (5 October 2001). For the last four years he was working on a feature length animation. Daniel is currently looking into what state it is in. Lenica worked on many early animations with Borowczyk, and is famous for his fantastic poster designs. Find out more about Lenica by following this link.

The Beast / La bête on UK DVD and VHS! Nouveaux Pictures will release on November 5 the most sought after and anticipated of Borowczyk's films on DVD and VHS, La bête / The Beast. As reported below, La bête was screened theatrically in the UK several months ago (with a running time of 98m, which, when transferred to video/DVD works out to 94m 05s), and it is this French language, English subtitled print which will be used for the newly created master. The only "problem" with doing this as I seet it is that the subtitles which are on the print will not be removable on the DVD. The DVD will feature the short The Tide (from Immoral Tales) as an extra, and a stills gallery provided courtesy of Mondo Erotico. Buy The Beast / La bête on DVD or VHS

those obscure objects of desire: the films of Walerian Borowczyk. The tireless Daniel Bird has programmed a truly incredible retrospective of Borowczyk's work, to be screened between Thursday 12 July and Sunday 15 July at the Lux Centre, 2-4 Hoxton Square, London, N1. Many of these films, particularly the early shorts, have never been previously screened in Britain. I'm sure that this is, without any doubt whatsoever, the most comprehensive selection of Borowczyk's work yet screened in one place, ever. And Borowczyk himself has agreed to make a rare appearance! Show your support for this event by pre-ordering tickets from the Lux Centre now on (020) 7684 0200. Click here to see the programme.

The Beast / La bête: Update Expect to see a UK theatrical release starting May 4th at the ABC Piccadilly Circus (opposite Tower Records). Support those nice folks over at Blue Dolphin Films by attending this independent screening! I have reproduced their current poster artwork on the left. Folloing its brief cinema run, it will appear on DVD and VHS later this year from Nouveaux Pictures.

Behind Convent Walls on UK television! British fans should tune in to Channel 4 on Sunday 11 March at 03:25 am for the Network Television Premiere of this Erotic Nunsploitation masterpiece. It was photographed by Luciano Tovoli, who also shot Argento's Suspiria, so you're in for a visual treat with this one! It's listed as the Italian language version with English subtitles.
|
The Beast / La bête Blue Dolphin Films have submitted an uncut version (see note above) of Borowczyk's most sought after film, La bête to the BBFC for a theatrical classification certificate. I expect it to pass uncut this time around, even though it was rejected outright when last submitted by New Realm Distributors back in February 1978. A decisicon is expected very soon. Luckily, things have changed dramatically at the board since those days, with the recent relaxation on censorship guidelines. Blue Dolphin also hope to follow the theatrical release with a sell through DVD and video - keep your fingers crossed!
|
Story of Sin / Dzieje Grzechu Britain's Pagan Video have acquired the UK distribution rights to Borowczyk's rarely seen Story of Sin (Dzieje Grzechu, 1975) for future DVD and Video release. They have confirmed to me that it will be the Polish language version with English subtitles. More details soon.
|
Immoral Tales on DVD and Video! America's Anchor Bay have released a DVD and video of Immoral Tales - fully uncut, in French or English with English subtitles. Extras include a rare theatrical trailer. Note: the English subtitles are non removable, which some viewers may find distracting when viewing the English dubbed version. The first Boro title makes its way to DVD in a less than perfect presentation - Why couldn't they get this one right?
|
Pagan Films release Love Rights on British Video! Pete Tombs, the man behind the incredible Immoral Tales and Mondo Macabro books launched his own UK video label, Pagan Films. Among the titles released to date is Borowczyk's Love Rights (aka: Ceremonie D'amour, 1988) It's a French language print with English subtitles.
|
Blanche This title is currently available in Britian on the VHS PAL format only. The quality is superb, and the film is presented in French with English subtitles. If you are a Borowczyk fan and you haven't seen this film, then we urge you to purchase it now. Buy Blanche on VHS

Other Borowczyk News Follow this link for a great Borowczyk exhibition. It features his paintings, drawings, animation stills and notes, as well as 3D sculptures, all from the Museum of Annecy in France. I have converted into HTML Daniel Bird's extensive essay written for the animation screenings programme at BAF, which took place on 9 June 1998. Kerri Sharp wrote an interesting piece for Headpress Magazine issue 18 entitled Hairy Hands Make Light Work - about female masturbation in La Bete / The Beast. It's well worth a read.
|
Older News Items Take a look at the Annecy animation festival web site, which you'll find here. I have included credits, stills and video art, although I still have many theatrical posters which I have not included due to space limitations. I have however managed to compile a near complete list of every animation short Borowczyk worked on, including those with animator and artist Jan Lenica. Read the following interview, which should prove of interest. I hope to include many more soon.
