New Book - Jess Franco. Énergies du fantasme: Press Release 08 Sep 2005: 1961: The Awful Dr. Orlof appears on the screens. This true expressionist nightmare featuring unprecedented glimpses of sadism and violence, which has captured horror moviegoers, is the fourth film of a young director from Madrid. Jess Franco has rapidly become a cult filmmaker, increasing relentlessly the abundance of his work. In his movies, we come across crazy surgeons, sadistic prison wardresses, the Cagliostro wizard, Frankestein and Dracula, the Venus in furs, the marchioness De Sade, black, perverse or bare-breasted countesses... Until the crisis of the European exploitation cinema at the beginning of the 80's, Jess Franco was the uncontested king of the Cinema Bis and local theatres, shooting recklessly one after another, horror films, adaptations of the eroticism and fantastic classics, hereby anticipating the big pornographic wave. But for the author of Vampyros Lesbos, the cinema of genre represented at first a laboratory of narrative and visual experiments. This amateur of jazz continuously mixed popular cinema with the underground, classicism and avant-garde. Free from any taboos, his films are Dionysiac parties whose queen is the fetishist figure of the female vampire. The result? A carnal art expressing itself plainly without suffering from the boundaries of the performance, the happening and the physical cinema. It is these many orientations that the book describes, analyzes, interacts, using cinema as well as literature, with great emphasis given to the vampire figure, from the Dracula of Bram Stoker to the Carmilla of Sheridan Le Fanu, referring to the works of Sade and Sacher-Masoch so as to describe as accurately as possible the fantasy device so specific to Jess Franco. Author of many articles on Brian de Palma, Lucio Fulci, David Lynch, Gus Van Sant, Stephane du Mesnildot was one of the initiators of the cinema magazine Admirada Ð Ambiances américaines and Fury - Le cinema d'action contemporain. Editor at the monthly Le Technicien du Film, he also wrote articles for different publications such as L'Ecran Fantastique, Simulacres, Cinémathèque and was involved in the creation of Exploding, magazine devoted to experimental cinema. He is listed in the summaries of the film by Jean Vigo L'Atalante (2000) and Jeune, dure et pure! Une histoire du cinéma d'avant-garde et expérimental en France (2001). Stephane du Mesnildot has also directed two short-films on the theme of Vampirism, Carmilla (2000) and Lacrima (2001). Jess Franco. Énergies du fantasme Collection « Raccords ».

Diamonds of Kilimandjaro + Golden Temple Amazons come to US DVD! 10 Feb 2005: Media Blasters have licensed two of Eurociné's worst (but fun) titles, Diamonds of Kilimandjaro (El tesoro de la diosa blanca,), which contains English and French soundtracks (but no English subtitles), and Golden Temple Amazons, which is not even a bona-fide Franco movie as it was completed by Alain Payet. Additionally, Media Blasters have screwed up with the cover, and have mistakenly printed the credits for Franco's Maciste contre la reine des Amazones! These DVDs will feature German soundtracks with optional English subtitles. These look superior to the US Image releases, with better menu designs and sharper image throughout. Get ready to experience Director Jess Franco at his most erotic, exotic and bizarre. This is THE GIRL FROM RIO! Richard Wyler (THE BOUNTY KILLER) and Maria Rohm (EUGENIE, JUSTINE co-star in this kinky cult favorite (also known as RIO 70, FUTURE WOMEN and THE SEVEN SECRETS OF SUMURU), packed with go-go boots, miniskirts and outrageous Jess Franco style. THE GIRL FROM RIO is now presented totally uncut and uncensored with all its eye-popping nudity, torture and lesbianism fully restored from original vault elements.Extras:
Sadomania: Now Totally Uncut And Uncensored For The First Time Ever In America! In all the annals of exploitation cinema, there has never been anything quite like it: Take a luscious young bride (beautiful Playboy centerfold Ursula Fellner) thrust into a brutal prison camp run by a sadistic woman warden (the stunning transsexual adult film star Ajita Wilson ). Add generous helpings of lesbian lust, bestial perversion and some very extreme violence. Then mix in a jaw-dropping performance by the film's controversial director as a degenerate white slaver. Do you dare take a forbidden taste of the wildest women-in-prison movie ever made?
Banned outright in the UK and available only in heavily censored versions in America, SADOMANIA is the sicko epic that could only come from the mind of Jess Franco (EUGENIE, MARQUIS DE SADE'S JUSTINE). The Christopher Lee Collection: Important News Update 07 Aug 2003: Those of you who pre-ordered Blue Underground's upcoming The Bloody Judge DVD may be a little annoyed to hear that this title will now only be available to purchase exclusively as part of the limited edition Christopher Lee Collection box set (which includes Franco's The Blood of Fu Manchu, The Castle of Fu Manchu, The Bloody Judge and the non Franco title Circus of Fear). Note that this box set is strictly limited to just 7,500 copies only! I would therefore suggest that anybody who has pre-ordered The Bloody Judge (it's still showing on Amazon as a pre-order) should cancel this title and order the box set instead to avoid disappointment, as it's bound to sell out fast and become an instant collector's item. UPDATE 19 August 2003: Box Set DVD Extras - Exclusive! The Bloody Judge: Blue Underground is proud to present the most complete and uncensored version of THE BLOODY JUDGE ever released, painstakingly restored from various European vault elements and now including such never-before-seen sequences as Maria Rohm's forced-lesbian jailhouse encounter as well as additional nudity, bloodshed and what Christopher Lee himself calls "scenes of extraordinary depravity!" The Blood of Fu Manchu: Blue Underground has fully restored THE BLOOD OF FU MANCHU from its original European negative complete with additional scenes of nudity and violence! The Castle of Fu Manchu: This definitive edition of THE CASTLE OF FU MANCHU has been newly restored from it's original print and packed with exclusive new Extras for a disc full of Fu Manchu mayhem! Circus of Fear: CIRCUS OF FEAR was originally released in America as PSYCHO CIRCUS in black & white and cut by more than 22 minutes. Blue Underground has now restored the film to its full running time from a stunning British color negative and added a long-lost 8-minute sequence recently discovered in a storage vault. This is CIRCUS OF FEAR as you've truly never been seen it before!

If this sells well, you can expect more Franco titles from this company. EARLIER NEWS: I've just received the check disc of Oracle Entertainment's next release, Eugenie De Sade and it literally blows the American disc out of the water! It features the exact same uncut version - but in a much cleaner and sharper looking transfer (with no digital glitches!), and instead of just offering the English dub track, the UK release will include both the English track and the far superior original French audio track, with the choice of optional English subtitles! Extras include the theatrical trailer and an extensive stills gallery (including the Italian De Sade 2000 photobusta set and locandina) as well as other numerous images. More Franco on American DVD 05 March 2003: America's Sub Rosa recently announced another two One Shot Productions titles; Blind Target and Incubus. Blind Target synopsis: San Hermoso at an early age and now returns as an adult after writing a best-selling novel betraying the evil and corruption in the government of her dirt poor native land. What was planned as a simple press junket though Latin America quickly evolves into a living nightmare of murder and kidnapping as she is caught up in the ongoing factions waging a dirty war of political insurrection. Stripped of her freedom and forced squarely into the middle of an assassination plot, Maria must weigh the odds between self-preservation and civil war. More Franco on DVD in Holland 10 Feb 2003: UPDATE! Holland's Shock label recently released Franco's Bloody Moon, Linda and Sadomania in English language versions with optional Dutch subtitles. All are PAL, All Regions coded. I have now received the discs and here are my comments: Linda: is edited - this is an incomplete 78m 16s version. The entire opening sequence showing Linda being chased along a beach by a jeep is missing, and the opening credits are also incomplete. The complete Australian tape (in PAL) runs for 81m 02s. The aspect ratio measures out to around 1.77:1. More details of cuts/edits when I have time to carefully check it out. Sadomania: this is the standard English dubbed export version which runs for 84m 14s - As pointed out by Mondo Erotico, the Spanish language version runs for 98m 07s. The ratio measures out to around 1.66:1. Bloody Moon: Again, this is the English dubbed export version. It is presented in full frame 1.33:1, as filmed. The audio is 7s ahead of where it should be throughout the whole 5m pre-credit sequence. This makes a bit of a nonsense of what is going on on-screen. Then at 4m 49s there is 7s of footage missing - the ending of the shot of Miguel as he finishes stabbing the girl, a shot of the girl's face not moving, and another shot of Miguel sitting back on the bed and breathing heavily. The sound from the title onwards is back in synch. All three discs include trailers for Linda and Bloody Moon (no trailer for Sadomania), as well as a slide show which is part of the menu screen, presenting the stills quite small with menu design overlay. All feature English soundtracks only with optional Dutch subtitles, and a fold-out inlay featuring stills and text.

A Virgin Among the Living Dead comes to German DVD 27 Jan 2003: I've just received the new X-rated DVD from Germany, and it's impressive! It comes in an oversized clamshell type box, a little like those old German rental tapes. The DVD itself includes English, German and French audio options (no subtitles) and some interesting extras, most notably the original opening titles sequence, as Christina princesse de l'érotisme. The actual onscreen title of the main feature bears this title too (with the subtitle A Virgin Among the Living Dead, but it looks to me like the opening credits were re-created specially for this DVD edition, or indeed perhaps for Eurociné's newly restored master. The running time is 74m 32s. Other extras include some alternate scenes, alternate trailers and other releases from X-Rated. There is also a two-disc edition available which includes the Eurociné version - this basically pads the story out with a lot of poor zombie footage, courtesy of an uncredited Jean rollin.
|
A Virgin Among the Living Dead comes to American DVD 16 Jan 2003: The long delayed Director's Cut of A Virgin Among the Living Dead comes to DVD in March! I was contacted last year by Eurocinee's Daniel lesoueur who was aware of the restoration I did on this film for Redemption way back in the 1990's. I sent him details of what I did and I presume that this new release will match my original restoration. When I met Franco back then, he informed me that it was the closest to his original version he had yet seen and was very pleased it had become available for the first time. In addition to A Virgin Among the Living Dead, Image will also release later in the year The Devil Came From Akasava (1970, with Soledad Miranda), X312: Flight to Hell (1971), and the rare English version of Schoolgirl Report!
|
A Virgin Among the Living Dead comes to Japanese DVD 16 Jan 2003: I've also been informed of a Japanese release from King Records. At this point it is unclear which version this is.
|
Eugenie comes to British DVD 04 Jan 2003: UK based Oracle Entertainment (actually Benson's World/Eureka) continue to release titles acquired from Eurociné. Their next is Eugenie (with Soledad Miranda) - which has been passed uncut by the BBFC. They tell me that it is a vast improvement over the American Wild East disc. Oracle Entertainment's previous release was the uncut version of Claude Pierson's Justine De Sade (with Alice Arno). If you purchased this, you'll know their quality is excellent.

Jack the Ripper DVD News Lets hope that the appearance of the Swiss VIP Jack the Ripper DVD on Amazon.com paves the way for a distribution deal for the Swiss VIP titles to be distributed Stateside by Image Entertainment, which I had originally suggested to VIP earlier this year. A Virgin Among the Living Dead + Dr. Jekyll's Mistresses UK DVDs 19 Sept: Britain's Arrow Films have recently released Franco's A Virgin among the Living Dead (without the Rollin footage, but utilising the old Redemption UK master, with burned-in subtitles) and Dr. Jekyll's Mistresses (same as Image's Dr. Orlof's Monster). Sadly, no extra features are included (not veven trailers!) on either disc, and the picture quality isn't particularly good either.

10 July: As reported here at Mondo Erotico several months ago, Spain's VellaVision/Impacto Films have released 9 recent Franco titles on DVD and VHS, and the good news is that the DVDs feature both English and Spanish soundtracks, plus English subtitles! The titles are: Red Silk, Blind Target, Dr. Wong's Virtual Hell, Vampire Blues, Tender Flesh, Broken Dolls, Lust for Frankenstein, Killer Barbys and Mari-Cookie and the Killer Tarantula. All DVDs are available from the excellent online Spanish store (in English) dvdgo.com.

More Franco titles coming to American DVD! 17 April: You heard it here first! Bill Lustig's Blue Underground recently acquired US DVD rights to Franco's The Bloody Judge - previously only available on DVD from Britain's Salvation Films. The US release will include an audio commentary with Christopher Lee and Jess Franco, which was recorded in London. It is understood that the stronger violent footage found only in the German version has also been located for this release. In addition to this title, Blue Underground will also release DVDs of Franco's Castle of Fu Manchu and Blood of Fu Manchu - possibly as a double disc set. Joining these releases will be the titles mentioned below and a couple of other surprise (non Franco) Harry Alan Towers productions.

Gritos en la noche - Spanish video premiere! 17 April: The original Spanish version of Franco's The Awful Dr. Orlof makes its Spanish video premiere this month under its original title of Gritos en la noche ("Cries in the Night"). This is part of the latest bunch of releases from Divisa's excellent CinŽ de Terror collection. It's not know n at this stage if this version is different in any way to the usual versions, but I'll let you know when I've seen it for myself. LATEST: I have now received this tape and it's a revelation! Although looking slightly worn, this Spanish version runs a whole 10 minutes longer than all previous releases! It also includes the most complete cast listing seen anywhere. I'll include a breakdown of all the extra scenes some time soon.

Sinister Cinema DVDs 17 April: Long established Sinister Cinema have recently announced a range of their own DVD releases. Unfortunately, instead of professionally replicated DVDs, these will be home produced quality DVD-Rs. The quality should in theory be no worse than any other DVD, but is solely dependent on the original masters used and the quality of the encoding. I'm sure they will be perfectly acceptable. The good news for Franco fans is that among these releases you'll find The Diabolical Dr. Z and Castle of Fu Manchu. I very much doubt that Sinister owns DVD rights to many of these recently announced titles, so they may well be worth snapping up while you have the chance. Visit the Sinister Cinema web site

Sex Charade & Les cauchemars naissent la nuit Found! Alain Petit recently located the original elements to Sex Charade and Les cauchemars naissent la nuit, both from 1970 and both featuring Soledad Miranda and Maria Rohm! These two sought after Franco films, neither of which had ever been released on home video anywhere in the world, are presently being digitally mastered and are available for licensing. It shouldn't be too long before these turn up on DVD! LATEST: Word on these is that they've since been acquired for US DVD by Media Blasters' Euro Cult label Shriek Show. More news as I get it.

Don Quijote (aka Don Quixote) on Spanish DVD! Franco's restoration of Orson Welles previously unreleased Don Quijote has been released on DVD in Spain. It includes both Spanish and English soundtracks, plus an English subtitle option. You can also purchase Chimes at Midnight too.

Eugenia (aka Eugenie De Sade) coming to American DVD! Eugenia (starring the gorgeous Soledad Miranda) - and not to be confused with the title mentioned below - has recently been acquired by New York based Wild East Productions, who are set to release this title on DVD some time soon. Anybody who has seen this film will be aware of its incest based theme, which many thought was one of the reasons it had not appeared on home video for around 20 years. This wasn't the case. The original elements became lost when a UK based company had acquired the distribution rights and subsequently went bust. It wasn't until I discovered the elements (along with several other Eurociné titles) in a liquidation warehouse in North London in 1999 and alerted Eurociné's Daniel Lesoeur to their whereabouts that the film could be restored and subsequently licensed for release. The forthcoming DVD release will feature the uncut, full-screen English dubbed version, and will include a theatrical trailer. Other exciting extras include a photo gallery and best of all, around 20 minutes of footage from three of Franco's uncompleted films! Eugenie ...The Story of Her Journey into Perversion coming to American DVD! It is with great pleasure that Mondo Erotico are able to bring you another World Exclusive! Bill Lustig's Blue Underground recently signed a deal with the London based rights owner for Franco's rarest film - Eugenie, the Story of Her Journey into Perversion (on-screen title is actually Marquis De Sade's "Philosophy in the Boudoir"), with Marie Liljedahl (of Inga fame) and Maria Rohm - and Christopher Lee! A DVD release is currently being planned for around April or May 2002. The DVD will feature the original uncut version transferred directly from the original negatives, and will include both English and French soundtracks (the German soundtrack rights reside with the German licensor). Interviews with Franco and Harry Alan Towers will also be included, as well as the theatrical trailer. It was Mondo Erotico's Marc Morris (with the help of a Mondo Erotico reader!) who were instrumental in locating the negatives and passing the details over to the UK rights owner. As part of the same license deal, Blue Underground have also acquired Franco's Marquis De Sade's Justine (aka Deadly Sactuary). This will be the complete two hour director's cut and not the shortened version previously released on tape in America by Monterey. Other Franco titles have also been acquired including The Girl from Rio (aka Future Women).
