12 Mar 2006: News. I'm sorry about the lack of updates here of late. I've been busy working hard on our next two Nucleus Films UK DVD releases, which are the Spanish horror/thriller Fausto 5.0 (in May) and Just Jaeckin's camp classic Gwendoline (in June). Both come with a wealth of bonus materials - for trailers and current DVD Specs, take a look here:
Fausto 5.0 (May release)
Gwendoline (June 12 release)
US News. OK, now on with the show. We've seen an abundance of once rare Giallo movies making their way to DVD, and recently Blue Underground announced these gems; Luigi Bazzoni's The Fifth Cord, Luciano Ercoli's The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion, Flavio Mogherini's The Pyjama Girl Case and Paolo Cavara's spectacular The Black Belly of the Tarantula. Sticking with Italian movies, Blue Underground's next releases are three crime movies (Polizi) from the master of the genre, Enzo Castellari (or his real name, Enzo Girolami). So look out for Street Law (Il cittadino si ribella / Anonymous Avenger, 1974), The Big Racket (Il grande racket, 1976) and
Heroin Busters (La Via della droga, 1977).
NoShame have also been sourcing some incredible examples of the Giallo genre too, and it's a joy to finally own stunning presentations of Death Walks on High Heels + Death Walks at Midnight, which are packaged together with a bonus CD, Sounds of Love and Death in Luciano Ercoli's The Death Box Set. I'm looking forward to getting my grubby mitts on Emilio Miraglia Killer Queen Box Set which packages together two demented classics, The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave + The Lady in Red Kills Seven Times. This even comes complete with a camp 'killer queen' figure. Fabulous! Also on the way from NoShame is Michele Soavi's 2001 TV cop movie Uno bianca and Carlo Ausino's 1977 crime drama Double Game, with George Hilton in the lead role.
At long last, Joël Séria's controversial Don't Deliver Us from Evil (Mais ne nous délivrez pas du mal) will be finding its way to DVD courtesy of those fine chaps over at Mondo Macabro. It seems like only yesterday that my copies of their previous Satan's Blood and
Virgins From Hell dropped through my door. Satan's Blood really is worth a look, and includes a fascinating insight into Satanism as told by Gavin Baddeley.
Another favourite label of mine is Nico B.'s Cult Epics, and this label never disappoints either. Next up on thir roster is Nico's own film, Bettie Page: Dark Angel. I know Nico is a big fan of Bettie, and this is his way of showing that affection. It includes some very cute recreations of Irving Klaw's original bondage loops, and is well worth a look. Of course, it goes without saying that you should have already pre-ordered The Walerian Borowczyk Collection (The Beast + Goto Island of Love + Love Rites) and there's also a stand-alone release for Goto, Island of Love.
Fox recently announced a release date of June 19 for their long-awaited release of Russ Meyer's Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, but sadly this will include an audio commentary only and no cast and crew featurettes whatsoever. Hopefully though this release will present the film in a nice new anamorphic transfer, which was lacking from last year's UK Fox DVD release. Also coming from Fox are Valley of the Dolls, Murder, Inc. The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, The Seven-Ups and the Monte Hellman rarity Back Door to Hell.
Michelangelo Antonioni's 1975 thriller The Passenger (Professione: Reporter) makes its DVD début courtesy of Sony in April, as does the unrated version of Eli Roth's phenomenally succesful Hostel.
There are a few more Fox back catalogue titles coming soon from Anchor Bay USA, one of which is Andrew Fleming's Bad Dreams, produced by Gale Anne Hurd. This one is all about a cult commune's mass suicide, and it's well worth a watch, as is Jean Claude Lord's Visiting Hours, which stars William Shatner and MIchael Ironside in this hosital slasher which found its way onto the Uk video nasties list back in the 1980s. The Handmade catalogue is now making its way across the Atlantic, and there are some real classics in there too. First up are John Mackenzie's seminal British crime thriller The Long Good Friday, along with Neil Jordan's Mona Lisa. Then there are the Masters of Horror discs. These have been a mixed-bag really, and if you do want them then I'd suggest the two packs, which represent better value for money. The first release is Masters of Horror: Coscarelli + Garris, which will be followed by Masters of Horror: John Carpenter + Stuart Gordon.
As usual there's a whole heap of exploiation cinema on the way from Something Weird, who are distributed by Image. I love their releases, which are always crammed with wonderful bonus extras. Next up are Hooked + The Flaming Teenage, Hip, Hot and 21 + Hot Thrills, Warm Chills, Career Bed + Sex By Advertisement and. Wrong Rut + Birthright.
Recently released were The Hookers + P.P.S., Speed Lovers + Thunder in Dixie, She Mob + Nymphs Anonymous and The Love Merchant + The Layout.
There are a couple more British sexploitation movies coming from Jezebel Films, these being John Bown's highly recommended Monique and the not so recommended She'll Follow You Anywhere.
There's a nice Krimi double feature too including The Monster of London City + Mystery of the Red Orchid, along with The Paul Morrissey Collection (Flesh + Trash + Heat).

14 Oct 2005: US News. Sorry about the lack of updates here recently - running a DVD releasing label and producing DVD extras is extremely time consuming, as you might have guessed. I have however kept the DVD release info up to date by posting release info down the sidebars of this opening page.
Right, now on with the the latest US news. I trust you all by now have the Giallo trilogy from Blue Underground? These are all must-haves; Dario Argento's Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Antonio Margheriti's Seven Deaths In The Cat's Eyes and Andrea Bianchi's extremely scuzzy Strip Nude For Your Killer. Coming next from Blue Underground are two limited edition sets; Shockumentary Vol. 1 (Mondo Cane, Mondo Cane 2 and Women of the World) and Shockumentary Vol. 2 (Africa Addio (English version), Goodbye Uncle Tom (English version) and David Gregory's documentary The Godfathers of Mondo). Those that missed out on the limited edition Mondo Cane Collection of 2003 willmost likley want topick these up, although the Italian versions of some of the movies are not included this time around. Also due from BU is Phillip Noyce's award winning drama Newsfront.
Mondo Macabro have been as busy as ever too, and their Turkish pop double-bill of Deathless Devil +
Tarkan vs The Vikings is one that hammers home what the label is about - the truly whacked-out and weird! But wait! Things get even more whacky with their next release, which is part two in their ongoing Dick Randall Collection - For Your Height Only + Challenge of the Tiger. If you long to see a midget flying through the air with the aid of a jet-pack and charming the ladeez, then Weng Weng, the star of For Your Height Only is your man!
MPI's Dark Sky Films have two cool biker movies heading our way; Jack Starrett's Vietnam biker flick The Losers, and Michel Levesque's bizarre Werewolves on Wheels - but that's not all! Dark Sky, as part of their Swingin' Cinema series, will also unleash the seldom seen Dog Eat Dog starring Jayne Mansfield!
Media Blasters will soon be issuing Joseph Ellison's very nasty Don't Go in the House in video art taken from the old UK video release (courtesy of your's truly). Pete Walker's The Comeback is also on the way too.
Panik House's first releases have literally blown most of us away. As I predicted back in June, this label is definitey one to watch. If you haven't already picked up their stunning Pinky Violence discs of Sex & Fury and Female Yakuza Tale: Inquisition and Torture then you're really are missing out. Those that did pick these up won't want to miss the latest, The Pinky Violence Collection! This set includes Criminal Woman: Killing Melody + Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom + Girl Boss Guerilla + Delinquent Girl Boss: Worthless To Confess and a bonus CD; Reiko Ike Sings!. Cool indeed.
Synapse Films have been hard at work re-mastering a whole heap of trailers for inclusion on their 42nd Street Forever Vol 1 trailer compilation, a joint efforst between Don May and Ban 1 Productions. The extremely inept (but fun) Nail Gun Massacre has also got a special Synapse treatment workover, as has Dusty Nelsons's long lost horror cult classic Effects and Adrian Kays' thriller Stillwater.
NoShame too have been gearing upfor the Chriastmas rush, and their latest titles will no doubt be finding their way into many a Christmas stocking this year, so put these Italian crime gems on your wish list; Stelvio Massi's Emergency Squad (with Tomas Milian) and The Last Round (with Luc Merenda), plus Michele Massimo Tarantini's A Man Called Magum (with Luc Merenda).
Although they've been available on UK DVD for quite some time, Lions Gate Films have signed a distribution deal to issue the Sam Arkoff library titles on American DVD for the first time. These kick off in January with the first two double-bills; How to Make a Monster + Blood of Dracula and Earth Vs the Spider + War of the Colosal Beast. Let's hope that instead of using those same old masters, Lions Gate decide to strike new masters from the original film elements. These movies really would look marvelous in their original aspect ratios etc.
As usual there's more sleaze from Something Weird Video; My Baby Is Black + Checkerboard, Hollywood Burlesque + Peek a Boo and an amazing tripple-bill of smut featuring Ultimate Degenerate + The Lusting Hours + In Hot Blood.
There's also the Fernando Arrabal Collection due from Cult Epics which as well as including the previously available Viva la muerte and J'Irai Comme un Cheval Fou exlusively includes The Guernica Tree (L'albero di Guernica) with this set.

 Cannibal Holocaust
|
|
29 Sep 2005: US News.
By far the most anticipated news is that Grindhouse have finally (!) set a release date for Cannibal Holocaust (2 disc special edition). Let's hope Grindhouse pull their finger out and get cracking on some of the other titles they have too.
| | |
|
 Street Trash
 Sensuous Nurse
 Big Alligator River
|
|
9 Aug 2005: US News. There are a number of cool box sets coming our way this fall but the one most fan's can't wait to get their hands on is Blue Underground's Blind Dead Collection, which includes all five of Amando de Ossorio's Knights Templar movies, beautifully restored to perfection; Tombs of the Blind Dead, The Return of the Evil Dead, The Ghost Galleon and Night of the Seagulls, plus a fifth bonus disc of extras. Blue Underground will also be issuing DTS upgrades of
Dead & Buried and
Two Evil Eyes.
Ursula Andress and Jack Palance star in NoShame's Aug 30 release of Nello Rossati's sexy The Sensuous Nurse (L'infermiera, 1975), which streets the same day as Giuliano Carnimeo's Secrets of a Call Girl (Anna, quel particolare piacere, 1973) and Marco Bellocchio's Devil in the Flesh (Il Diavolo in corpo,1986). For September look out for Sergio Martino's Big Alligator River (Il fiume del grande caimano / The River of the Great Alligator, 1979) with Barbara Bach (!) and Marcello Aliprandi's gothic A Whisper in the Dark (1976) which stars John Phillip Law and Natalie Delon. Their most anticipated release of the bunch though must be Sergio Martino's highly sough-after giallo Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (Il tuo vizio é una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave / Gently Before She Dies, 1972). Bring it on!
On the subject of highly anticiptaed DVD releases, because of Media Blasters' negotiations with MGM regarding Fulci's A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, they were able to pursuade them to sub-licnese Joe D'Amato's Anthropophagus: The Grim Reaper, which will be issued on the Shriek Show label as a two disc set. Other releases to look out for include Mario Gariazzo's Amazonia: The Catherine Miles Story which was cheekily issued in some countries as Cannibal Holocaust Part 2! There's also Enrique López Eguiluz's Paul Naschy-starring Frankenstein's Bloody Terror (La Marca del Hombre-lobo / The Mark of the Wolf Man (1970), and Tobe Hooper's ill-fated The Dark - on which an uncredited Hooper was replaced by John 'Bud' Cardos. From Media Blasters' Exploitation Digital label comes Ilias Milonakos' Greek/Italian co-production Emanuelle's Daughter: Queen of Sados which will go down well with sleaze fans for sure. On their Japan Shock label has Inoshiro Honda's hilarious Space Ameoba on the way, which is better known to all as Yog: Monster from Space. I remember supplying clips of this one to the producer's of Ministry's N.W.A. music promo video many moons ago!
Mondo Macabro's latest is a slice go Gallic horror from Bruno Gantillon; Girl Slaves of Morgana Le Fay was originally issued in the UK, but this is a much souped-up and remastered edition. From Synapse comes a welcome release of Jim Muro's melt movie Street Trash, along with Colin Eggleston's superb thriller Long Weekend and the softcore version of Alex Fridolinski's Thriller: They Call Her One Eye which is beng issued primarily to get into the mainstream stores.
Freddie Francis' Amicus production Torture Garden is heading our way courtesy of Columbia Tristar, along with Nick Grinde's The Man With Nine Lives from 1940, with Boris Karloff. From the former MGM (now owned by Sony/Columbia) comes Nicholas Gessner's 1976
Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane with Jodie Foster and Martin Sheen, along with Peter Collinson's 1975 remake of
The Spiral Staircase which stars Jacqueline Bisset. There's also a nice re-mastered edition of John carpenter's The Fog, plus Frank Laloggia's ghost story The Lady in White.
Criterion have Nic Roeg's Bad Timing and The Man Who Fell to Earth, along with Jean-Luc Godard's Masculin Feminin, Mike Leigh's Naked and Jane Campion's An Angel at My Table.
Al Pacino stars in Jerry Schatzberg's must-see The Panic in Needle Park from Fox, who also have a five disc set of Bruce Lee: Ultimate Collection on the way. I guess the time is right for Paramount to re-release a special collector's edition of George Pal's The War of the Worlds, and Lions Gate have bowed to pressure and have announced an uncut release of the smash hit Saw.
Hitchcock fans may well be tempted to go for Universal's Alfred Hitchcock - Masterpiece Collection (which includes Saboteur (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Rope (1948), Rear Window (1954), The Trouble With Harry (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960), The Birds (1963), Marnie (1964), Torn Curtain (1966), Topaz (1969), Frenzy (1972), Family Plot (1976)). A worthy addition to any collection methinks.

30 July 2005: UK News. New UK DVD companies! I'd like to personally announce the first two releases from Nucleus Films, a new DVD label set up by director Jake West and myself. For the past two years we have been busy providing quality DVD extras for the likes of Anchor Bay etc. It was always our intention to issue quality movies onto DVD, so coming your way in September you can look forward to seeing Mañuel Gómez Pereira's psycho sexual thriller Between Your Legs Entre las piernas, 1999) starring Victoria Abril and Javier Bardem), and Miguel Bardem's twisted sci-fi extravaganza The Ugliest Woman in the World (La mujer más fea del mundo, 1999) starring the stunning Elia Galera. Future Nucleus Films releases include a stunning uncut edition of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline with both English and French soundtracks plus optional English subtitles, and the amazing Spanish thriller Fausto 5.0 - with many more titles to be announced soon!
The same month, London's FrightFest festival are set to launch their own label too - FrightFest presents... which will be handled exclusively by Revolver Entertainment. Initial releases are set to include Conor McMahon's Irish zombie movie Dead Meat, Eros Puglielli's recent giallo, Eyes of Crystal (Eros Puglielli) and Andreas Marschall's Tears of Kali. Look out for Eric Valette's Malefique too.
Another new UK label to emerge is Second Run DVD. Catering to world cinema tastes, their first batch of titles includes such rarities as Jerzy Kawalerowicz's Mother Joan of the Angels (Matka Joanna od Aniolow, 1961), Nicolas Philibert's In the Land of the Deaf (Le Pays des sourds, 1992), Karoly Makk's Love (Szerelem, 1971), Milos Forman's Audition/Talent Competition (Konkurs, 1963), and two rare 'gay cinema' British dramas, Ron Peck's Nighthawks (1978) and Strip Jack Naked (Nighthawks II, 1991).
Other goodies are the way from Momentum. Recent must-have's include Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects, Panna Rittikrai's Born to Fight (Kerd ma lui,2004), with some cool re-release titles including William Girdler's fun-tastic The Manitou (1977), Jack Sholder's Alone In The Dark, Mike Hodges's hilariously camp Flash Gordon and James W. Roberson's Superstition (aka The Witch), Christopher Coppola's Dracula's Widow (1989) and Alec Mills's dire Bloodmoon.
Neil Marshall's follow-up to his 2002 hit Dog Soldiers is the far more entertaining The Descent, which will be heading to a store near you in October from Pathé.
MGM UK are due to issue the following The Masque Of The Red Death, The Tomb Of Ligeia, Frogs, a Spaghetti Westerns set in addition tot he usual run of the mill titles.
The back catalogue of Pedro Almodovar has been out of print for some time in the UK, so it's great to see that these are getting the DVD releases they deserve from Optimum. There's an Almodovar box set, and individual releases of Women On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Matador, The Flower of My Secret, Kika, Law of Desire and his most recent, Bad Habits. Optimum, also have more Sonny Chiba titles, this time some rarities; Junya Sato's Bullet Train (Shinkansen daibakuha, 1975), G.I.
