The Cat and the Canary be issued on USA DVD 05 October 2004: First Run Features are set to re-issue Metzger's The Cat and the Canary, in a version which adds more footage (as per the UK edition). It will include a photo history of the play, stills from the three previous versions and photos of the leads in the original play. The Cat and the Canary comes to UK DVD 30 April 2004: Britain's Anchor Bay (UK) are due to release Metzger's British production of The Cat and the Canary. This UK DVD will include additional sequences from Metzger's lab elements, and addional extras not present on the out of print US disc, including a theatrical trailer and a stills gallery and an audio commentary with producer Richard Gordon. An all-star cast appear: Honor Blackman, Michael Callan, Edward Fox, Wendy Hiller, Olivia Hussey, Beatrix Lehmann, Carol Lynley, Daniel Massey, Peter McEnery, Wilfred Hyde White. Camille 2000 comes to UK DVD 09 Feb 2003: As reported by Mondo Erotico back in 2001, Salvation Films (UK) have signed a deal with Metzger's sales agent to release some of his titles in the UK. First up is Camille 2000. They have secured twelve minutes of previously unseen footage (listed below) for this release direct from Metzger himself. These scenes are included as extras - they look a bit rough, but it's good that they are included.

The Image (aka The Punishment of Anne) on American DVD - UNCUT! I'm pleased to report that Mondo Erotico has been instrumental in getting this uncompromising film to American DVD in its full, uncut version! After a conversation with Metzger last year, he explained to me that he'd like to see his S&M masterpiece The Image (aka The Punishment of Anne) get an American DVD release. I explained to him that I knew just the right company to approach. I contacted Don May at Synapse Films and, although he had not previously seen the film, after watching a screening cassette, was impressed enough to sign the film up for US distribution!

Olga's Girls coming to DVD! Synapse Films are set to release Joseph P. Mawra's legendary sexploitation classic Olga's Girls on DVD some time early 2002. The film, already available on video from First Rn Features, was distributed by Metzger's Audubon Films. Made in 1964, it was a follow up to White Slaves of Chinatown, which also starred Audrey Campbell. It has achieved cult status among fans of S&M, but is quite camp by today's standards. It is hoped that Campbell will provide an audio commentary. | ||

The Libertine coming to American DVD! I've just been given the go-ahead to let you all know that New York based First Run Features will be releasing Pasquale Festa Campanile's The Libertine (aka La matriarca, starring the sexy Catherine Spaak and Jean Louis Trintignant) some time March/April 2002. This DVD will be a vast improvement over the currently available VHS release. It will feature the full uncut version, and will utilise footage from both the original Italian version and the American Audubon cut, as supervised by Radley himself. The Nude Set coming to DVD and VHS! Radley tell's Mondo Erotico: "It's a film that occupies a very special place in my heart as it was the first born. Ava and I started the company on the movie. We had heard about it because Janus (where Ava had worked) had a nice success with a French film called Peche de Jeunesse (aka The Sins of Youth) which also starred Agnes Laurent. The film's original title was Mademoiselle Striptease. There was much confusion because someone at the time retitled a Brigitte Bardot film as Mam'zelle Striptease. We called it The Nude Set - but some newspapers then wouldn't take the title so we had an alternate one - The Fast Set. It was a charming film and the timing was right - and Audubon Films was launched. It did so well for us that we went on to buy a film (that Agnes Laurent had actually made prior to The Nude Set) which we called The Twilight Girls - and a later one, Soft Skin on Black Silk, which she made in Spain. Metzger on Italian PAL VHS! Italian genre magazine Nocturno have released the first four titles in their new Masters of Eroticism: The Cinema of Radley Metzger collection: Camille 2000, Score, The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann and The Princess and the Call Girl. The good news is that Score is the full uncut version! All are English language with Italian subtitles, and widescreen masters will be used where available. The Cat and the Canary on British television British viewers should tune in to Channel 5 on Friday January 12 at 01:35 am for a rare television screening of this Radley Metzger film. It's not your usual Metzger film either - it's a British production, and is based on the play by John Willard. It features the talents of Honor Blackman, Edward Fox and Olivia Hussey among many other familiar faces. | ||

Available now DVD! VCA have released DVDs of these two Metzger/Paris hardcore masterpieces. Barbara Broadcast features previously censored footage. Here's a quote from a VCA spokesperson: "We're currently working on The Opening of Misty Beethoven and Barbara Broadcast, and these are going to be collector's editions" Maverick disclosed. "We're restoring the previously censored material to the DVD. We went back to the original 1-inch masters and drew the material fresh. There are still some modifications that had to be made due to legal issues, but a lot of what was cut out [in the video release] has been restored. The DVDs will only be missing a few seconds here and there, but several minutes cut from the VHS (including a full scene in Misty Beethoven) will now be back in place. Also, we'll have a running commentary by the stars of the film - Gloria Leonard and Jamie Gillis for Misty Beethoven; and we're working on getting Jamie and Annette Haven for Barbara Broadcast. I'm sure the fans are really going to appreciate the effort we put into restoring the content." Mondo Erotico says: Sadly, VCA used their old 1-inch masters (nobody should be using these for DVD authoring!). These "new" versions are not in their correct aspect ratios. Surely creating new digital masters from the original elements would have been the better (although costlier) option. The long out of print Danish video releases were widescreen, uncut and looked incredible. However, the audio commentaries included on these DVD's make a welcome and interesting bonus. | |

Score News After numerous emails regarding the censored re-release of Score I decided to find out exactly why this film was edited for its recent release on First Run Features. It's worth noting that its previous (limited) only release direct from Audubon Films was intact, although this release was offered on a limited, mail order basis only. It would appear that some distributors and wholesale chains would prefer not to handle "sexually explicit" material, so in this case, Metzger supervised an edit which deleted most of the male nudity. If you want to know exactly what's missing, follow this link. Even worse, copies distributed by Ingram had even more material edited out. Apparently they would not purchase the title without further edits being made. Ingram sales only represent about 10-15% of unit sales, so most copies are not affected. | ||

The Image / L'esclave / The Punishment of Anne This rare video release from Belgium from long defunct Farah Film Productions dates back to 1982, and is in French. It runs a whole 7 minutes longer than the Japanese release, but don't let this fool you. This release contains both soft AND hard versions of the film. Each hardcore scene is immediately followed by the same scene, but in a softcore variation. My guess is that the master was prepared so video companies could edit out either the hard or soft footage, depending on their intended market. | |

The Frightened Woman / The Laughing Woman First Run Features' release of Piero Schivazappa's this erotic gem (original title Femina ridens) contains a rather murky looking pan and scan transfer (it's widescreen on the DVD, but it still looks awful) of this stunning slice of Eurotica. However, the recent UK re-release from Salvation Films features a stunning looking English dubbed widescreen transfer! Sadly, no DVD release is planned for the UK version. I couldn't believe my eyes when I found this in my local record store's "Easy Listening" section - believe me, it's a real gem, and has been in my CD player contstantly since!
